Jorge Thielen Armand on La Soledad

La Soledad, the first feature film from director Jorge Thielen Armand, tells the story of a poor family in Venezuela during a time of economic turmoil in the country.

It follows Jose El Negro, his grandmother, Rosina, and his wife and daughter, who all live in an old abandoned mansion owned by the family Rosina used to work for.

Their story takes a turn for the worse when the actual owners decide to sell the property, and Jose and his family are told they have to leave.

Its a personal story for Jorge: it's his family that owns the property. Rosina helped take care of him growing up, and Jose was his childhood friend.

La Soledad is a blend of documentary and fiction. It's scripted, but based on true events, and the main characters are played by their real-life counterparts.

Jorge talked to us about his family history, his unique approach to filmmaking and the responsibility he feels for his subjects once the cameras stop rolling.
