Katie Cooper on In the Spotlight

Earla Dunbar has spent most of her life struggling with social phobia, an intense fear of social situations. At the height of her disorder, she was housebound for six years.

She sought help, and with therapy and lots of hard work, she's now a mental health advocate, speaking out and bringing awareness to social phobia.

Director Katie Cooper followed Earla through her journey for several years. The result is her film, In the Spotlight, an intimate portrait that shows viewers what it's like to live with this disorder and to walk along the long path to recovery.

Katie talked to us about how she first approached Earla to make a documentary about her, the challenges of getting someone with social phobia to open up, and how film can be a vehicle for social awareness.
