In his documentary mini series The Divine Oneness, filmmaker Omar Majeed takes us into a makeshift mosque in Toronto that's probably not like any other mosque you’ve heard about.
The El-Tawhid Juma Circle, also known as the Toronto Unity Mosque, has made a name for itself by creating a welcoming space for members of the LGBT community and people of all faiths. It’s also a sanctuary from Islamophobia, homophobia and misogyny.
Part of the miniseries follows the group as they come together in the wake of last year’s massacre in Orlando, when a young Muslim man opened fire inside a gay nightclub, killing 49 people.
Omar talked to us about what it was like for him to earn the trust of the mosque and to convince members to open up about their difficult pasts. He also addressed representations of Islam in the media and explained how telling different kinds of stories can help open minds and create better dialogue.
