Maureen Judge on My Millennial Life
It seems like everyone has something to say about millennials these days. But award-winning filmmaker Maureen Judge wanted to hear from millennials themselves.
Her film My Millennial Life goes beyond the headlines and thinkpieces and takes us into the lives of several 20-somethings as they struggle to launch their careers and navigate relationships with their families and romantic partners.
There’s Hope, who lives at home with her parents and is desperate to move out; Meron, an aspiring journalist who cleans hotel rooms to make ends meet; James, a tech entrepreneur who’s working on his fledgling startup; and Emily, who’s struggling to find a job in her field that will also keep her afloat.
We get a glimpse of their inner thoughts as they deal with one blow after another — and keep getting back up.
My Millennial Life won this year's Canadian Screen Award for best documentary program. Maureen also directed an online interactive version of the documentary that features a larger cast of characters and their different perspectives.
She talked to us about approaching her subjects without any judgement, her observational style of filmmaking, and what she learned about the millennial generation.
